![]() If you get, you get and if you don’t, you still have a great story. I was already a part of the queer community when I read Banana Fish so it’s entirely possible that I picked up on context clues that would not have been obvious to the general public. It could still be worth it for those that do see the details. ![]() I guess we can argue that there is enough overt representation in media nowadays that it doesn’t matter if it goes over the heads of some fans. Psycho-Pass has an explicit lesbian relationship but it’s never considered Yuri after all. If a tree falls in the forest sort of thing. ![]() At that point, it’s sort of the same as it not being there at all. After all, is its representation if it’s so subtle or too small a part in the story, that people don’t pick up on it? A chat full of anime bloggers, people who love the medium and dissect it for fun, didn’t notice or see it as such. Personally, I think that’s a shame.īut then I started thinking, maybe I’m wrong. Since the explosion in popularity of queer romances in anime, I find that we don’t get as many of those elusive storylines. And the potential it had remained limitless. The fact that the core of the relationship was something a bit more private to Ash and Eiji and even the audience(readers) weren’t in on all the details, made it special. Making it all subtle and tongue in cheek would have been annoying and potentially ruined the series.īut in Banana Fish, I thought it added a lot. Given absolutely needed to be about Mafuyu and Ritsuka falling in love. I more or less fell in love with the first season of Given. And don’t get me wrong, a lot of great stories simply work best that way. It seems like the main point of the characters involved is to fall in love. That is how Ash would act in a romantic context and the relationship sort of feels like it developed naturally and not like it was the point of the story.Ī lot of BL and Yuri stories have romance in the forefront, even when the series isn’t necessarily a romance. It’s written in a way where the actions and clues scattered around make perfect sense for these particular characters. And to be clear, I still think the relationship is clear in the manga, just not quite as front and center maybe. The fact is that it creates layered and nuanced representation. I’m not sure if Akimi Yoshida was trying to get around censorship laws or age restriction regulation, or whether she simply wanted to portray the relationship in this casual and subtle way. However, I also really liked the representation in the manga. And I particularly like when it’s part of a complex and rounded-out story, rather than the entire point. ![]() I am all for BL and queer representation in media. I never followed up on that original conversation but I did reread the manga and there are a few things I personally took away from the experience.įirst of all, I like the fact that the adaptation made the relationship between Ash and Eiji completely clear. Then the anime came out and made all the implicit connections, explicit. That’s not usually my style, if anything I’m too dense for subtext but if no one else at all had noticed, I could be off on this one. After all, maybe I had read too much into it. I was told politely that I must be thinking about something else and Banana Fish was not a BL story in any way.Īt the time, I didn’t insist. Neither this megafan, nor anyone in the chat had any idea what I was talking about. We were chatting about it and I offhand mentioned that Banana Fish was a BL classic and in my opinion did a lot to bring representation in a mature context. They had also been a huge fan of the manga, and it was actually their favourite. At the time, I was also part of a few anime blogger chat rooms and I remember one of our members being absolutely thrilled about it all. ![]() ![]() This damage caused clinicians to abandon positive pressure ventilation for years. Other researchers were developing positive as well as negative pressure ventilation systems.īy 1850, the French Academy of Sciences published that what we now call barotrauma, such as tension pneumothoraces, rupture of alveoli, and emphysematous changes in the lungs, was reported in patients receiving mechanical bellows system ventilation. It was a popular method in the early 1800s. Not cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR, with fast chest compressions over the heart, but instead a chest compression technique designed to help push the air out and pull the air back in. By 1837, chest compressions were preferred for moving air in out of the lungs. Several physiologists conducted research over the next 50 years to develop mechanical ventilation. Hunter circulated air in and out of the lungs. His work was performed on dogs rather than humans, and used a set of tubes inserted into the canine trachea (one tube took air in and another tube carried air out). His system pushed air in and out of the lung. John Hunter, an enterprising researcher, developed a double bellows system. Mechanical ventilation as we know it today actually goes back to 1776, when Dr. Let’s take a step back and review the history of mechanical ventilation. LTVV can help ameliorate these complications and improve outcomes. Mechanical ventilation can activate a variety of inflammatory mediators in the lungs, thus accelerating injury and increasing incidence of ARDS. Complications include volutrauma (in which overdistention of some alveoli areas and underdistention of other areas occurs), and barotrauma, which causes complications from high pressure that can lead to catastrophic tension pneumothoraces, and also localized injury to the alveoli. ![]() Low tidal volume ventilation, or LTVV, protects lungs from a variety of insults and injuries associated with mechanical ventilation. In addition, the emerging evidence indicates that LTVV is a best practice for all ventilated patients to reduce ventilator-associated harm. However, low tidal volume strategies are probably beneficial in all mechanically ventilated patients, beyond only ARDS patients.Ī low tidal volume strategy has become the standard of care for patients with ARDS as well as the best practice in order to improve outcomes in those patients. More recent studies confirm that LTVV benefits ARDS patients. The 2000 ARDSNet study found a significant benefit for patients with ARDS when using lower tidal volumes (6 cc/kg versus a more traditional tidal volume of 12 cc/kg. Why should we be taking this approach in trying to apply it to our patients? So why should we be using a LTVV strategy? Predicted body weight and PEEP are the two main components of low tidal volume ventilation. We’ll explain some of the data advocating for positive end-expiratory pressure settings, or PEEP, at or above 5 centimeters of water. The other big component of low tidal volume strategy is the avoidance of the use of ZEEP. It’s not based on their actual body weight, nor even an ideal body weight. Predicted body weight is the key measurement, and is based purely on the patient’s height and their gender. LTVV is an approach that targets tidal volume between 6 and 8 milliliters per kilogram of predicted body weight for patients without acute respiratory distress syndrome or ARDS, and 4 to 6 milliliters per kilogram of predicted body weight for those with ARDS. It targets much lower tidal volumes than those that have been traditionally used while also focusing on the avoidance of zero positive end-expiratory pressure (ZEEP). LTVV is a lung protective strategy that seeks to prevent ventilator-associated lung injury. What is low tidal volume ventilation strategy? Your unit may already be implementing a low tidal volume ventilation strategy to protect your patients’ lungs, or you may need more information to drive the process forward and engage your staff. ![]() You may be somewhat familiar with the concept of low tidal volume strategy. Slide 3: What is Low Tidal Volume Ventilation? You will also be able to describe the role of LTVV in the prevention of ventilator-associated events, outline the historical background and scientific evidence supporting the use of LTVV, and recommend evidence-based standards for implementing a LTVV strategy. Slide 2: Learning ObjectivesĪfter this session, you will be able to define low tidal volume ventilation, referred to as LTVV. This module introduces and provides evidence for the lung protective low tidal volume strategy, and offers recommendations for implementation. When Odysseus and his men land on Thrinacia, one of the islands dedicated to the sun god, Odysseus warns them not to touch any of Helios’ cattle or sheep that graze on the land. Helios has a small but notable role in the Odyssey. Hercules was then able to use this cup to reach his destination. Helios, however, was so taken with the boldness of this action that he presented Hercules with his golden cup. Upon realizing what he had done, he apologized to the Titan. Caught in the act, the gods then banished Ares from Olympus for his crime. He reported this to Hephaestus, Aphrodite’s husband, and helped set a trap to catch the two lovers. When Demeter, Persephone’s mother, demanded to know the whereabout of her daughter, the Titan was able to inform her that Hades had kidnapped the goddess.Īnother tale illustrating his ability describes Helios witnessing an affair between Aphrodite and Ares. It is not uncommon so see Helios given the epitaph Panoptes, or all-seeing, as the Greeks believed that he could witness anything in the heavens or on earth.Īccording to the myth about Persephone’s abduction by Hades, it was Helios who saw the crime occur. So, I turned my attention to first extracting the entire two-PCB “sandwich,” beginning by detaching the five antenna connectors, along with a separate two-wire connector, and removing six additional screws (one of which was intentionally-or-not different than the other six, along with the prior two): Regardless, my initial attempts to separate it from the main board were thwarted by close-proximity vertical “knobs” in the aluminum chassis that precluded sufficient horizontal PCB movement (along with, it turns out, other impediments that will soon be apparent): My hypothesis is that this approach conceptually allowed for Google to optionally support LAN-only wired connectivity for a mesh hub built on the same base platform, much as Nest Wifi does. One of the first things you’ll likely notice is that the LAN, WAN and power connectors are located on a separate daughter card, although the Ethernet switch is on the main board. Once removed, insert a flat-head screwdriver with tab-proximity discernment, and twist, and you’re inside: That solitary screw you see is the only meaningful barrier to getting inside. Two of the three units in my refurbished set were second-generation AC-1304 models, but the third was a first-generation NLS-1304-25, which I’ll be dissecting today. And more recently, the company quietly released a lower-priced third-generation design, whose only notable evolution (at least on the outside) is the migration from a USB-C connector-based to a barrel connector-based power supply. To date, Google’s actually made three different versions of the Google Wifi device the second-generation model AC-1304 (FCC ID A4RAC-1304) is absent the Zigbee facilities embedded (but, as with its OnHub precursor, never robustly supported) in the original model NLS-1304-25 (FCC ID A4RNLS-1304-25). ![]() That said, however, I still have a compelling use for at least one of the Google Wifi units…as a teardown victim, of course. Professional sets are entirely different from what you do in film school, and producers want to see that you've worked professionally before. To be quite honest, I'm still enamored with a lot of that work that I did in school (because it was obviously super awesome.) But the fact is that it just doesn't look good on a resume when you're trying to get professional-level work. It is better to have a few real, higher budget credits - regardless of how lowly the position - than to be listed as the Producer of an unknown student short.Ĭoburn is right on the money when she says that we all have affection for the work that we did in school, or from when we were just getting started out in the industry. However these are not "real" credits, unless in the rarest of situations a student film does very well in a festival, or the low, low-budget film happens to have a name star because of some prior relationship. Most of the time, drop those projects "off the bottom" of your résumé as you get more real credits to include. ![]() I know we all have a lot of affection for our early work. Keeping student and micro-budget projects on your résumé for too long Keep it clean from the fluff while making sure that all of your essential skills are represented, and you'll be well on your way to crafting a successful resume. It's entirely too tempting to put down the fact that you're an experienced sound man when, in reality, you held a boom on a student short 7 years ago. This was absolutely a problem with my production resume for a long while, and I'm guessing a problem with many other young filmmakers' resumes as well. Don’t have "position sought" taking up space on the page. UPM’s on real movies with real budgets, are looking for individuals to do specific jobs. Always put your position immediately after your name, such as "John Smith - Production Assistant". The rest of that saying is "master of none". ![]() So without any further ado, here are just a few of the mistakes that we might all be making with our production resumes: Lack of clarity about your positionĭon’t have a one-size-fits-all résumé, and don’t try to be a jack-of-all-trades either. But what if your resume isn't up to snuff? What if you put too much information on there, or not enough? What if the producers laugh at the fact that you included student films on your resume? Well, worry no more, No Film Schoolers, because in a fantastic post for Production Hub, Robyn Coburn, who reviews production resumes and cover letters for a living, wrote up a list of the 7 most common mistakes that she sees from aspiring filmmakers on their resumes. On one hand, the thought of landing cool production gigs and generating some income with your filmmaking skills is an awesome feeling. The game was reviewed using a final “retail” Switch download code provided by Perfect World Entertainment. 3 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. And having both on the go via the Switch, where a lengthy commute can be whiled away while smashing rock elementals with big hammers, is a gift to us all. They’re both pinnacles of action RPG design that coming at the genre in different ways. Of course, the classic question remains: Is Torchlight 2 better than Diablo 3? But I’m not sure that it matters. This is another way that Torchlight 2’s aesthetic continues to help it the game looks far less muddy on Switch than Diablo 3 does. Panic Button, a seasoned porting house behind the Switch versions of Doom and Warframe, managed to jam in all of the detail of the original game without having to decrease the resolution or frame rate in any noticeable way. The game’s age also seems to work in its favor when it comes to performance, as Torchlight 2 run smoothly even on Nintendo Switch. The colorful, stylized look of the characters doesn’t seem dated, especially with the camera pulled back for a wider view of the action. That might have been a disappointment for most games - this is a 7-year-old game, after all - but Torchlight 2 has aged wonderfully. Torchlight 2 is mostly untouched outside of the controls, however. Digging through your piles of loot is a painless process. Inventory management has also been reimagined, lifting the ingenious radial menus of Diablo 3’s console ports. There’s no clicking required here, as Torchlight 2 lets you move your character directly with the analog stick while assigning skills to various face buttons and triggers. The biggest difference between this console version of Torchlight 2 and the original PC release are the controls, which had to be playable on a console controller instead of a mouse and keyboard. For people who were turned off by the simplification of Diablo 3’s skill system, Torchlight 2 felt like a continuation of Diablo 2’s more hardcore design tenets. Torchlight 2 fleshed that approach out even further, adding online multiplayer and a deeper campaign. The original Torchlight dipped its toes into those waters as a light, if sometimes mindless, action game, while adding quality-of-life features like pets that could travel back to town and sell unwanted loot. The Torchlight franchise has always been about finding ways to improve on the standards set by Diablo. Real talk: I’ve only found one great loot-centric action-RPG on Switch, and it’s Diablo 3. The hybrid console and portable seems like it would be the perfect platform for lengthy action RPGs, but there are very few Diablo-style games to be found on Nintendo’s console, and even fewer great ones. Which is why Torchlight 2’s arrival on Switch is such a blessing. Its main competitor? Believe it or not, Diablo 3. But Torchlight 2 is finally getting a console release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, after a seven-year wait. Torchlight 2 has since faded into obscurity as a PC-only game, while Diablo 3 was updated, ported, and supported throughout its life. Torchlight 2 was the Pepsi to Diablo 3’s New Coke. Going up against the king of the genre is a rough go, but Torchlight 2 earned a dedicated fan base, many of whom had bounced off Blizzard’s game, which was suffering from a variety of launch issues. The loot-heavy, top-down action RPG was released in 2012, the same year as Diablo 3. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This command rasterizes document_original.pdf, making an pixel-based image of each page, at 150 DPI, and outputs the result as document_flat.pdf.
